Bule’s Rescue
On the 31st of March 2020, a tiny elephant, aged between 2-3 months, was found wandering aimlessly alone on the main road between Isiolo and Archer’s Post, in Isiolo County. She was split from the family for several days before found herself having walked to a nearby village, known as Jenerica. Bule was stranded, thirsty and alone, aimlessly crossing the road back and forth. Chalma Lolosoly, a passing motorist alerted Kenya Wildlife Service who immediately assessed the scene and took her to the nearest place of safety. Meanwhile, we were notified by the authorities about the situation and the Reteti Rescue Team immediately set off.
To this day, we do not know what happened to Bule’s mother, but we do know that the separation was not a willing one. Thankfully, Bule was physically okay, just very thirsty. She was safely transported to her new home at Reteti. We cannot imagine how painfully difficult it was for Bule to be separated from her mother. The Reteti keepers worked around the clock comforting her and helping her settle into her new home. She really is such a brave little elephant.
Bule Today
Bule has grown into a very smart and cheeky little calf! She always keeps us on our toes here at Reteti. One of her best party tricks is sneaking into the back of the ‘late’ feeding group and trying to wrangle an extra milk bottle from the keepers! Sometimes she pretends to be browsing, but as soon as the keeper turns away, she runs for the milk! She’s incredibly smart and just a little bit cheeky! She very quickly learned how to break into the kitchen to look for food. She is brave and stands up to the older elephants when she feels it’s necessary.
She is just a ‘growing-girl’ and is certainly one of the chunkier ellies in the Reteti herd. She has always preferred male keepers, and her favourite keeper is Paramian Leado, who has looked after her since she arrived. She spends her days at Reteti with her best ellie friends, Sera and Lerai, and proudly leads the nursery group when they go out to graze. She is a natural born and loveable leader, our Bule. Oh Bule, we do love you so.
We are also able to distinguish her by her head-to-ear ratio which is quite small, which in turn, makes her trunk seem long.
Bule’s Name
The names of the Reteti elephants come from either the area that they were rescued from, or from a distinguishing feature or character trait. Bule is a Borana word meaning a strong breed of an animal. It’s used when a herder loves a specific animal family because they are a good breed - with good features and likelihood of survival. Bule has been very healthy since the day she was rescued, and have not once been sick, till today - truly living up to her name!
