Sarara’s Rescue Story
Sarara aka Alibosar was found in the Singing Wells, located just 45 minutes from Reteti. He was very young, around four months old and came to us on 21 January 2019. The Samburu warriors who visited the well the next morning to get water for their livestock, found Sarara and notified Reteti. We like to think of him not so much as an orphan as he is at boarding school, his family will be ready to pick him up as soon as he’s strong enough.
Lchurai, who was one of the older females in the Reteti Herd, was Sarara’s surrogate mother and she took him under her watchful eye. It was incredible to witness their bond and relationship. Lchurai was released in May 2020 along with Shaba in Sera Conservancy. By this time, Sarara was well integrated in the herd and became best friends with Lemorijo, the oldest elephant in the herd - who he is still best friends with today. Sarara also loves to make a noise by sucking his trunk (bless him!) and he does it so often, that Lomunyak now does it too!
Since Sarara is from our home range - here in Namunyak Conservancy - we believe he will meet his family again someday.
